A weapon is a double sided object both used to preserve and destroy man. And for both of these purposes, future weapons technology is being developed and maintained to continue protecting peace and order, to have defensive measures in times of chaos and dominate unruly forces if the need arises. The role of weapons in our history has always followed a pattern. One civilization was overrun by another just because the invader has more powerful weapons than the other. To have a patent understanding, let us have a look back into the fruition of the weapons technology. New Technology 2012, will change the world forever.

A Look Back at the Future Weapons Technology

The primeval weapons arsenal shows stone tools, wooden spears, simple club and slings. As men  progresssed and warring tribes began to raid each other, spears, club and slings came up which now includes arrows and bows. Greek especially had a great input on the history of the future weapons technology as they introduced the use of fire and blade into war. The Chinese as well have contributed to the evolution of weapons as they invented the use of powders for their fire crackers which later showcased as  gunpowder used during middle ages war in Europe.

From that small spark came the rifles and cannon which later on developed to machine-gun and other high-powered guns and missiles. And where there were once chariots, the weapon evolution gave way to tanks, battleships, rockets and war planes. However, nothing in the past could ever bring about the destruction the nuclear bomb potentially can do. All throughout the past, future weapons technology progress was never more powerful and deadlier until one weapon can easily trigger the end of the world as we know it.

The Present Future Weapons Technology

What the present need for its future weapons technology is something that would compensate the gulf war of 1991 lack in terms of weapons technology and battle tactic. It was evident that air strikes created great advantages.

Small Diameter Bomb – GBU-39 (GBU-39/B SDB I) followed the Miniature Munitions Demonstration Technology (MMTD) in the 1990s. The SDB I weapon technology was designed to be more accurate compared to the JDAM and to penetrate hard targets. The bombs have optimal guidance modes (airburst, contact, delay). The SBD I will soon be replaced by Raytheon GBU-53/B or the SBD II. It will be in production by 2017. The SDB II will have a multimode seeker and two way data link.

Last 2007, UAVs or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles had been greatly funded. Hypersonic aircraft or SR-72 was then thought to be a very important future military technology. Speculations for Aurora or the SR-72 were a plenty. Was it a military secret or just another sci-fi story?

The development of the SR-72 until now is dubbed as a military black project. This means that development is highly classified and existence is denied until the project is done. This is like the F-117 Nighthawk aircraft with stealth attack capabilities and the B-2 Spirit which is a stealth bomber where both are publicly denied while under development but was announced afterwards.

However, news of the SR-72 development was confirmed last 2007 by the Air Force and the project were awarded to the Lockheed’s Advanced Development Projects. This project aims to develop a 4000-mph stealth plane with flying capacity of 100000 feet altitudes. The forecasted day of its debut would be on 2020. Any news concerning the development is a complete hush at the moment.

Another development for air craft is the Electromagnetic launch for the US navy to have a 30% increased of launch energy for aircraft carriers complementing the new Electro-MAgnetic Launch System (EMALS) catapult generation.

Future weapons technology on firearms includes XM25 which was deployed last November 2010. The XM2010 rifles were given to US snipers which can hit a target with a distance 3,937 feet. Darpa was also developed to go against strong winds for a better hit accuracy. XM2010 and Darpa both were deployed this year.

By 2012, Teledyne (Darpa contractor) will deliver a smart .50-caliber bullet prototype with trajectory automatically adjusting to the wind fluctuations.

Another future weapon is the SMSS. SMSS (Squad Mission Support System) also has passed its final test and was deployed to Afghanistan. It is remote controlled and has autonomous modes.

The Russian’s T-90 technologies derived from the T-72 in the gulf war in 1991 are something future weapons technology has to look up into. The T-90 tanks provide better firepower, protection and mobility which are capable of going through deep water.

Future nuclear weapons, the most dreaded weapon for mass destruction, will be completely unusual from that of the destruction Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Nuclear will be used is strategic target bombing and in a smaller unit. Any nuclear war will brought about famine, environmental destruction and the annihilation of cities.

Visions for Future Weapons Technology

The future weapons technology would likely to focus on robotics and virtual soldiers. Ground based robots will be for mapping the area of combat. Quadcopers will be used for surveillance in the air. As of now, future weapons innovators were able to design robotic hands and mechanical wings which will possibly bring cyber soldiers and iron man like armory.

Future combat is seen as unmanned combat. The idea of a remote control war was triggered by present weapons technology that are mostly designed for a lesser human involvement in the field. This includes the development of surveillance ground-based and air remote control devices.

The 2003 war in Iraq revealed 7000 robots up in the air and about 12,000 ground-based robots deployed. Our military robots can pave the way to cyber soldiers. And today’s drone strikes might as well be the new generation of army.

World war III became at a standstill with all these weapons of mass destruction. With all these powerful weapons innovations from future weapons technology innovators, no major country would go up against another as it would surely bring the end of the world. Thus, these weapons created to assault became weapons that vetoed war.
